Scenic Set Builder

Florida Event Décor is the premier special event company serving clients in Florida and throughout the U.S. We are a full service décor, design and production company providing services for corporate events. We maintain a 20,000 square foot warehouse space containing rental props, lighting, furniture, and custom built items used in creating special events.

We are looking for a highly motivated and passionate individual to play a key role in the scenic department. The scenic set builder is primarily responsible for the build of various exhibit components, props, custom structures and stage sets. Candidate must have flexibility with work schedules that may include occasional late nights, some weekends, travel and overtime.

The ideal candidate will be detail oriented, well organized, a problem solver with a professional demeanor that is able to communicate effectively with managers and team members. They must possess excellent carpentry skills, ability to read and interpret engineered drawings, and past experience in prop making.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Collaborate closely with designers and scenic team to translate designed concept into buildable projects.
  • Provide fabrication, assembly and finish carpentry support for exhibits, displays, scenic facades and graphic signs, taking the lead on ensuring the quality and durability needed to provide a world-class product
  • Operate standard shop tools such as table saw, router, table saw, sanders and band saw and various hand power tools required in the fabrication and assembly of final products.
  • Oversee shop safety and organization, as well as development of the scenic department
  • Sketch build out details and make technical drawings of how a piece of scenery will be built
  • Working with a team of others to construct sets
  • Building mechanical sets and furniture props is preferred
  • Interpreting set designs, working out how to build them and how much they will cost to build 
  • Coordinate and assign tasks to outside vendors, install crew and internal support staff as needed

Skills/Requirements

  • Must possess a minimum of 5+ years of work experience and training in a fabrication position, preferably in a theatre, scenic shop or creative setting.
  • Previous experience as an Exhibit Builder, Master or Journeyman Cabinet Maker, and/or Installer is highly desirable and preferred.
  • Must be able to read and interpret engineering, production and shop drawings and define parts from those drawings to be able to complete the build.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge and a high level of skill with hand tools, power tools, various saws, routers, and drills.
  • Experience with bending plywoods, laminates, veneers, solid plastics, adhesives.
  • Experience with painting and finishing is preferred.
  • Experience using a range of materials including timber, steel, aluminium, plastics, fabrics, leather, clay, plaster, resins, foams, motors and electronic components to construct props.
  • Highly organized, self-motivated and able to multi-task

Compensation

  • $18 – $20 per hour – depending on experience
  • Available after 90 day probation period:
  • 1 week of vacation for first calendar year
  • Health care stipend

Event Specialist – Crew setup / Warehouse / Driver

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Set up and take down of products for events
  • Work with Production Manager and Lead Crew to prepare/plan for upcoming events
  • Pull, stage, load and unload rental items
  • Read, understand, and execute client contracts
  • Drive trucks with accuracy and care
  • Off-site set up and take down of décor items
  • Maintain, organize, and repair inventory
  • Work as a team to keep warehouse clean and organized
  • Communicate effectively and positively with managers and clients
  • Problem solve issues relating to timing, location, and overall event set-up and strike
  • Act as the team lead or team player by giving or taking direction when appropriate

Qualifications

  • High School diploma plus related experience
  • 2+ years of experience driving 26’ box trucks
  • Current driver’s license with a clean driving record
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs & push over 100 lbs
  • Electrical knowledge (+)
  • Ability to work with basic hand tools and small power tools
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work
  • Fluent in English – Spanish a plus
  • Proficient in giving direction, delegating, and managing event set-up and strike
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Critical eye for detail and aesthetics

  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure

Compensation

  • Up to $14 per hour – depending on matching experience
